Ensuites, powder rooms and basement bathrooms
One bathroom for a whole family is a daily traffic jam. We connect you with a local contractor who adds new bathrooms across Woodstock and Oxford County, from a main-floor powder room to a full ensuite.
- Serving Woodstock, Ingersoll, Tillsonburg and all of Oxford County.
- No fee to us. You only pay for the work itself.
Where a new bathroom can go
- An ensuite carved out of a large bedroom, a walk-in closet or a small spare room next door
- A powder room (toilet and sink) under the stairs or in a hall closet on the main floor
- A basement bathroom, easiest where there's a rough-in in the floor
The plumbing question
What decides the cost most is how far the new bathroom is from the main drain stack, and whether the drains can run there by gravity. Close to the stack is simple. Further away may mean opening ceilings below or, in a basement without a rough-in, cutting the concrete or adding an up-flush pump. Every toilet also needs a proper vent.
Town sewer or septic
On town sewer, a new bathroom is mostly a plumbing and space question. On a rural property with a septic system, as is common across Norwich, Zorra, South-West Oxford and Blandford-Blenheim, the system's capacity is part of the plan too. Adding a bathroom doesn't always mean upgrading the septic, but it should be checked.
Permits
Adding a bathroom needs a building permit for the plumbing from your municipality, and an ESA permit for the electrical. The contractor usually applies and books the inspections. See our permit guide.
Finishing the whole basement? Our sister site FindBasements.ca covers that.
Questions
How much space does a powder room need?
Less than most people expect. A toilet and a small sink can fit in a space about 3 by 5 feet, depending on the door and layout.
Can I add a bathroom if I'm on a septic system?
Usually, yes. The septic system's size and condition are checked as part of the plan, and the contractor or a septic installer can tell you whether it needs any work.
What's a rough-in?
Capped drain pipes in the floor or wall, put in when the house was built so a bathroom can be added later. They make a new basement bathroom much simpler.
